The last time I was in haiti, a friend of mine told me something that makes sense.
It was the first time I heard it.
When haitians were slaves under the rule of the french, they were not alowed to touch the "Joumou".
Pumpkin was a favorite in the island and something that the french really loved.
Because we won our independence on January 1st, Dessalines told everyone they could eat all the "Joumou" they wanted.
Since then, Haitians drink "Soup Joumou" Every January 1st
If anyone can confirm that story, please do.
Thanks Bebe for sharing that with me!
