RE: Vertieres Day Celebration In Berkeley Californ
This November 15, Afro-Caribbean band Kalbass Kreyol is hosting at Ashkenaz for the third year a Haitian Cultural Extravaganza to celebrate Vertieres Day; the last victorious battle against Napoleon's army that ended slavery in Haiti and on surrounding islands in the Caribbean.
This event will benefit cyclone victims in Gonaives, Haiti.
You will be treated to a variety of high caliber performances trouhgout the evening starting with Haiti's most renown and internationally acclaimed folkloric dance troupe JAKA. They will grace the stage at Ashkenaz while touring the US. Haitian master drummer JJAKOMO is also on the bill. His grasp and mastery of Haitian and World Beat drumming puts his performances a cut above everyone else in the industry.
Kalbass Kreyol, California's leading exponents of the different Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as Kompa, Rara, Zouk, Reggae, Afro-Funk and Merengue will keep you glued to the dance floor.
Their music is irresistible and contagious.
The band's leader Sophis with his rich and dynamic vocal porfolio adds to the mix a level of intensity and showmanship that is both compelling and mesmerizing.
The show starts at 9:30PM, but come early for a free hour of Kompa dance lesson at 8:00PM.
