A CELEBRATION FOR HAITI AT LINCOLN CENTER, NEW YORK CITY
The Franklin H. William Caribbean Culture Center/African Diaspora Institute is a non-profit organization, multi disciplinary, cultural arts center organization, named in honor of the late Franklin H. William ambassador to Ghana and who served as the second president of the Board of the Caribbean Cultural Center. Founded in 1976 by Marta Moreno Vega, Ph.D. and now president of the Board, Dr. Vega’s aim in creating this institution was to provide accurate historical information on the cultures, art and belief systems of African and their descendants. The Center continues to document, promulgate and promote the global impact of African cultures through it’s programming that includes: concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and cultural arts in education school programs, international festivals and conferences.
The Caribbean Cultural Center houses a resource and research center, an art gallery, and an international gift shop that features books, music and video recordings, handcrafted jewelry, instruments and other authentic art from throughout the African Diaspora. PRESENTS
A CELEBRATION OF HAITI INDEPENDENCE
Featuring
Zin & Boukman Esperyans & Other Surprises
Who: The Franklin H. William Caribbean Culture Center Presents: Zin who is one of the most popular Haitian Konpa music bands. Bringing ten musicians to the stage, Zin mixes Alex Abellard's spicy tone with the sweet voice of Alan Cave. Zin regularly performs at New York's SOB's, has been heard internationally at festivals in Canada and France, at New Orleans Jazz Festival and Central Park Summerstage. They have won two New York Caribbean Music Awards and achieved significant recognition in Haiti. The irresistible sounds of Konpa Music incorporate meringue rhythms and lyrics with double meanings that sing of love, politics and international relations. Opening for Zin is Lataye, condensing the spiritual essence of all positive aspects of Vodou. Led by Daniel "Dadi" Beaubrun and his sister Marjorie, former members of the acclaimed Boukman Esperyans, Lataye's passionate sound blends traditional Haitian Vodou rhythms with rock, pop and blues, in a world music fusion known as Rasin Mizik. Joining Lataye is the popular traditional style dance ensemble Feets of Rhythm.
